That Carol Douglas can write them! in fact, I think they named the compact disc in honor of her. This song should be on CD's next CD for sure, and not just this song, but this version. You have captured the eseence of the lyrics perfectly, cut right through to that "heart of gold" Carol writes about. Superb playing and singing - and the production makes sure we don't miss any of it. Hmmm, maybe CD is really Carol Dazed.

I'm amazed at the diverse versions of this song that are appearing. This is a really lovely passionate version Dazed. I like the absence of drums....it really gives the track a vulnerable quality that is perfect for your take on the lyrics. Lovely picking and nice bass. Excellent vocals. Great work Cheers Brian

Great track. Nice and simple but rocks like a good un. Powerful rhythm guitars with a great classic rock feel. Everything is nice and tight and has a good live feel to it. This would be fun to play live I think.

Hi Dazed,, I love this. - This is most enjoyable in the sound and playing. Reminds me very very much of some rockin band -- and i just can't seem to pin down what it's connecting me to. The guitar lead hook is certainly a strong point in this recording. very uplifting in feel.

Nice instrumental. The drums are pushing some of the fills a little, but then again, that's whats keeping the song moving along. Excellent sound ... you always know how to get the best out of a mix.

Ah... Cool stuff guys... I didn't expect anything less :) I have only been here a short time, but I have listened to much both here and at Nexus, enough to know class songs when I hear them. I used to write nothing but instrumentals, and I know it is an artform all in itself. To sustain the interest, you have to start off with a solid gold riff or pattern. This feels very joyous? Very uplifting. Celebratory. It almost feels like spacerock to me... It has the upbeat, alive feel, the classic rock feel... As a life long space cadet,I LOVE it :) Was sad to hear it fade. Cracking song. Nigel.

Really good lyrics and with such an important message to convey, I like that they are out front in the mix a bit. KILLER vox. Band is tight. Nice guitar tone and the lead around the 2:35 mark is sweet & subtle. Good tune all around.

Another cracking collab guys. Has a real band sound about it. Lead vocals, superb,E M O T I O N,you can never mistake that. Very nice backing vocals as well. Nice gentle arangement going on in the background with the strings... Very nice lead, nothing too over the top. The mix is minimalist, placing the vocals centre stage, and with a song that is lyric driven that has to be right. Yep,another CLASS composition. Nigel.

Interesting composition. Like the staccato strings in the verse breaks. Layered vocals are tight, though I might try to separate them a little bit more. Overall production is tight. A solid tune. Best of the 80's guitar solo here-- a nice touch.

Dazed, i wanted to thank you for taking the time to critique that problem track of mine .. Cinderella. your observations and thoughts are valued and helpful for me. So to return the favour in a genuine way ive made time to get my but over to your page and listen. here's some thoughts about Desparate Man-- in short,, Really cool work. This track,,, has several stunning fine aspects that make it soar: 1-that acqustic playing at the intro, then again at 1:50 etc. is beautiful and so top notch. really cool chords picked there. i love that progression. 2- those pizzacatto keys that come in gently at 1:50 are feel good mama!!! (okay that doesnt make sense,, but i cant find better words to say it ;;LOL) 3- The vocal comes in and by the tone of the voice and talent of the singer,, aside from the lyrics, the vocal says, this is the real deal- pro rockers at work. 4- i think there is cool quality to the phrasing and feel of the chorus refrain, especially 'im a desperate',, killer delivery and phrasing on the way that comes out. 5- At 2.15, is one of those sublime perfect moments,, a perfect place,, in the vocal and instruments working together to create the scene in sound- sound that becomes a part of the feelings of the listener. cool lyrics.. shane for The DEEP

This a beautiful song guys. D has already done all the technical stuff, which is his strong point,so I can concentrate on my strong point, how the song amkes me feel :) With a title like that,it had to deliver that desperation... Daxed, have said since coming here that you are one of the best singers on the WWW,and this reinforces that belief. You go from the introspective fragility to the outpouring of desperation. Excellent lyrics as well mate, lyrics are something I really enjoy in songs. Brian, well brian is a dimaond man in my book,he so gets into the music he makes,he gets into the soul of songs and let's them be what they want to be FULLY. Excellent collab gents,I fully expect this to become a radio classic. Nigel.

Congrats on that beautiful heart-work, Dazed and Bri-an. I'm blown away by that fantastic drum presence (and the room effect on them), and especially the fine background arrangement shows your profession... subtle orchestra and finest synth cream.... and that SINGER!!! Pascalinity mix master says: WELL DONE!!! Ok, I'm not so good with praising my own know how... just wanted to say: this song is a touching one, this is GOOD!

Powerful song from the lyrics through to the arrangement and orchestration. Always wondered what your vocals would sound like with a slightly drier treatment and I think it works well. Good use of dynamics throughout. There is a real clarity to the vocals in the intro and verses that does tend to get lost a little in the chorus. Not sure if it's the unison harmony or maybe just the panning of it. Sorry - nit picking. Great song.

OK, I JUST REVIEWED THIS, BUT THE SAME MIX YOU ALL REVIEWED, AND NOW DAZED HAS UPLOADED A DIFFERENT MIX!!!!!! :) I HAD A LISTEN, AND THIS WAS MY REVIEW OF THE NEW MIX THAT I SENT HIM AS A PM!!!! :) I DECIDED TO POST IT HEAR, SO YOU ALL DIDNīT THINK I LOST MY HEARING OR SOMETHING!!!!!! :) MY NEW REVIEW OF THIS NEW MIX; YEAH, Different mix, and much better than the first one I reviewed. This one has less mids, more bass, but could use a bit more highs, and the overall level is pretty low, but the mix is better. The other mix actually hurt my ears!!!!! LOL I like the sound of the snare much better on this. Itīs much more dry and warmer, and those high guitars arenīt as piercing sounding as in the first mix I reviewed. Your vocals still sound a bit scratchy in places, but overall a much better mix. :D Now people are going to listen to this and think I lost my hearing and my mind. :D LOL Maybe I should post this review as well, explaining you uploaded a new mix?! :D SO THERE YOU GO!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) THIS MIX IS AN IMPROVEMENT!!!!! :)
User Image
DICARLO PRODUCTIONS (12 Mar 2008 06:28 PM)
GOOD SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) THIS IS OBVIOUSLY NOT THE FINAL MIX!!!!!!!!!! :) DAZED, GOOD LYRICS, VOCALS AND GUITARS, ETC!!! :) BRIAN, NICE DRUMMING, AND I ASSUME SOME EXTRAS AS WELL!!!! :) I DIDNīT LISTEN TO THE ORIGINAL VERSION, BUT I KNOW YOUR SOUNDS!!!! :) THE MIX HAS A TOO MANY MIDS IN IT!!!! HURTS MY EARS A BIT!!!! BRIAN, YOU STILL NEED TO WORK ON YOUR EQīS FOR THE CYMBALS, AND MAYBE BRING THE CYMBALS DOWN A TOUCH AS WELL. EVERYTHING SOUNDS A BIT CRASHY WITH SOME CLIPPING GOING ON IN SECTIONS!!!! THOSE HIGH GUITARS ARE NICE, BUT HURT THE EARS A BIT AS WELL. OVERALL TOO MUCH MID RANGE ON EVERYTHING, AND NOT ENOUGH BASS OR HIGHS. IīM MISSING THE CLARITY, EXCEPT FOR THE VERY BEGINNING, THE FIRST 8 BARS WERE COOL. :) THE REST OF THE SONG SHOULD SOUND LIKE THAT AS WELL, NO MATTER HOW MANY INSTRUMENTS YOU ADD. IīLL BE CURIOUS TO HEAR THE NEXT MIXES!!!! :) I LIKE THIS SONG A LOT, AND I MIGHT EVEN BE INTERESTED IN MIXING & MASTERING THIS (AT NO CHARGE) SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE!!!! :) THIS STILL NEEDS WORK, BUT ITīS A VERY GOOD SONG!!!!! :) NICE ONE GUYS!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Wow, hearing some different things here! I love the stuff with Warren and FM, as you know, but this shows a different side of you. Of course, hearing Bri-an's influences on this track is an inspired thing. The lyrics are a bit darker than what I'm used to from you, and that's a good thing. Sounds like you're singing with a bit more attitude and authority, nuances to your voice that I hadn't noticed before. Guitar work is solid as a rock, as it should be, and the tones are well chosen. The overall effect I'm getting is of a dark anthem, if there is such a thing. Nice to hear you've let your inner cynic loose for one, Dazed. A helluva fine collab, and I hope to hear more of this from you. Far as the production goes, it sounds pretty crisp through these cheap headphones at 5 a.m. Thanks for sharing this work in progess. Peace, Jim

Ah yes, now it's really coming together. From memory, in my review of the earlier version I mentioned some slight clashing between the drums and the electric Rhythm guitar which I thought were distracting for the clear brilliance of the song itself. Bri-an's drums are just right to my ears. The guitar and drums are now perfectly in synch and the use of the strings operates to turn the spotlight onto that sensation chorus section. Wow, this song is now shining bright. Great piece of work. Love it. Cheers Brian

This sounds like a killer composition and performance. I wish there was a little more sparkle/bite to the drums and vocals. I think this would give the song a driving power that I'll bet it has when you play it live. Good stuff. Dave

This is a great song, you guys have the groove going, good tight playing, pro vocal sound, a well oiled rock-n-roll machine! This song reminded me of the 80s band Little America.

This is really good. Love the guitar tones. I wish the drums were bigger and the bass tighter; they seem a bit muddy here. Musically it's very good. -Un's Dad
